The President of LDPM urged Moldovan citizens to participate in the referendum

The President of the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova, Vlad Filat, called on Moldovan citizens to participate in the constitutional referendum on September 5th, which will offer the possibility for the future president to be directly elected by the people and not as a result of political negotiations in the Parliament.

"For me, this action is a very important one, because it signifies the fulfillment of a promise made to citizens: to give them back the right to elect their president", the LDPM leader said.

Vlad Filat reminded that in February 2008, LDPM launched a wide campaign of collecting signatures for amending the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova on how to choose the president. Despite the pressure from the communist authorities, LDPM managed to collect over 220,000 signatures required to initiate the referendum, but the previous government hampered the completion of this initiative.

LDPM President said that he promised citizens that he would not abandon this project. "At the moment, together with the members of the Alliance for European Integration, we initiated the referendum for amending the Constitution, so that citizens could decide whether the next president should be elected by them", Filat emphasized.

The Liberal Democratic leader considers it to be a very important moment for Moldova, which shows that democracy reached a mature phase, in which citizens are responsible for their own destiny. "I am proud that we initiated this project together with other colleagues from LDPM and I hope that it will be accomplished", Vlad Filat said.

LDPM President reminded that one of the party messages in the 2009 electoral campaign was "Moldova without Voronin, Moldova without a Communist government".

"Together we managed to achieve this objective. The vote cast on September 5th will prove again to those who try to oppose the will of the people, that Moldova is now a democratic country and its citizens are free", Vlad Filat stated.

LDPM President urged Moldovan citizens to participate in the referendum. "We need everyone's presence. The more we are, the more legitimate the decision will be. Your vote can end the period when someone else decided who your president will be ", Vlad Filat said, stressing that "it is time to end political instability”.
