On June 23rd, the President of the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova, Vlad Filat, attended the European People's Party Summit in Brussels.

During the meeting, Vlad Filat exchanged views with European officials, including: Francois Fillon, French Prime Minister; Jerzi Buzek, European Parliament President; Silvio Berlusconi, Italian Prime Minister and Herman Van Rompuy, European Council President, who will visit Moldova on July 6th following Vlad Filat’s invitation.

The European officials congratulated the LDPM President for the good results obtained at the local elections. By participating for the first time in local elections, the party registered the biggest number of elected mayors and second biggest number of councilors, which is a remarkable result, Vlad Filat’s speakers said.

In this context, the LDPM said that the results obtained by AEI in these elections allow the creation of local democratic coalitions, which is the only way to ensure the continuity of initiated reforms for the benefit of Moldovan citizens.

The discussions also addressed the issue of overcoming the political crisis. Vlad Filat pointed out that all further efforts will focus on electing the president and avoiding early parliamentary elections. However, Filat mentioned that the political crisis can be overcome only by respecting constitutional norms.

On June 21st, Wilfried Martens, the EPP President, congratulated Vlad Filat, the LDPM president, appreciating the electoral performance of the Liberal-Democrats. "Registering the best results in the election of mayors across the country (one third of all mayors), the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova, a member observer of the EPP, has improved its position as driver of the AEI. These results prove once again that the citizens of Moldova have chosen the path of European integration and trust the government of Prime Minister Vlad Filat", the message said.

LDPM is an observer member of the most important European political family, starting with February 2010.
